Engineered oak and underfloor heating in Edinburgh

Engineered oak is the natural partner because its cross-laminated ply core moves far less than solid timber as the slab warms and cools. A 180mm plank with a 4mm wear layer conducts heat well while still allowing future sanding.
The detail that makes a heated floor last is preparation. We test the screed before fitting, expecting it to be dry to 65% relative humidity or below, check flatness, and ask for the heating to be commissioned and run through its warm-up cycle first. Can engineered oak be glued over underfloor heating in an Edinburgh new build?
Yes. Ply-based engineered oak is designed for it. The screed must be fully dry (typically 65% RH or below), flat and with the heating commissioned before installation. Full-bond gluing with a flexible adhesive gives the best heat transfer, and floor surface temperature should not exceed 27°C.
Can you make skirting boards to match the floor?
Yes. For this project we made low-profile oak skirting boards and door facings to order, finished in the same hardwax oil colour as the floor, so trims and floor read as one material rather than painted MDF against oak.
