Wood & Parquet Flooring FAQ – Expert Advice on Types, Finishes & Installation
1. What types of wood flooring are available?
The main options are solid wood flooring, crafted from a single piece of wood for a timeless look, and engineered wood flooring, which has a layered structure with a hardwood top layer and plywood core. Solid wood can be sanded multiple times and is ideal for classic aesthetics, while engineered wood is more dimensionally stable and better suited for areas with humidity or underfloor heating.
2. Can wood flooring be installed with underfloor heating?
Yes, engineered wood is generally suitable for underfloor heating, as it’s designed for stability in changing temperatures. However, solid wood is less compatible as it’s more prone to warping or cracking with heat fluctuations. Be sure to check that both flooring and heating systems are compatible.
3. What’s the difference between lacquered and oiled finishes?
Lacquered finishes provide a protective surface with a smooth, often glossy appearance, while oiled finishes penetrate the wood, enhancing the grain and offering a natural, matte look. Oiled floors may develop a natural patina over time but do require regular re-oiling to maintain their finish (but not necessary).
4. Is wood flooring pet-friendly?
Yes, wood flooring can be pet-friendly, especially harder species and finishes that mask minor scratches, like matte or textured finishes. Regular cleaning also minimises pet hair and dander, helping keep the floor looking its best.
5. What wood species do you offer, and what are their unique characteristics?
We supply several premium wood species, each with its own unique look and durability:
- European Oak: Versatile and durable, with a classic, rich grain suitable for various finishes.
- Ash: Light-toned with distinct grain patterns, perfect for bright, clean aesthetics.
- Walnut: Dark, rich colour and fine grain for an elegant, luxurious feel.
- Douglas Fir: Pale with a fine, linear grain; ideal for modern or Scandinavian-style interiors.
- Siberian Larch: Naturally weather-resistant, suitable for high-moisture areas or outdoor use.
6. Can all your flooring styles, like herringbone, chevron, and planks, be matched in the same colour or finish?
Yes, we can create matching finishes across different styles like herringbone, chevron, and engineered planks, ensuring a seamless look throughout your space.
7. Do you offer custom stair solutions?
Yes, we provide both solid and engineered wood stair treads and risers, and can clad stairs using wide planks with stair nosing. This allows for a cohesive design, integrating stairs beautifully with the rest of your flooring.

Yes, we provide comprehensive subfloor preparation, including moisture testing and levelling if necessary. This service is subject to a site visit and inspection to ensure a solid foundation for your flooring.
18. What is the lifespan of wood flooring?
With proper care and regular maintenance, wood flooring can last an exceptionally long time. Solid wood floors are highly durable and can be refinished multiple times to restore their original beauty. Engineered wood flooring, with its durable wear layer, also offers impressive longevity, especially when installed and maintained in suitable conditions. Both types of wood flooring can serve as long-term investments, adding warmth, elegance, and lasting value to your home for many years.
19. Is wood flooring suitable for kitchens and bathrooms?
Engineered wooden floors - popular choice for kitchens, as it offers stability in fluctuating temperatures and humidity. While wood is generally less ideal for bathrooms, certain engineered floors with moisture-resistant finishes may work in lower-moisture bathroom areas.
20. How does wood flooring affect indoor air quality?
Wood flooring emits minimal VOCs and is hypoallergenic, making it a healthy option for indoor air quality. Choosing low-VOC finishes further supports a healthy home environment.
21. What’s the difference between wood grades, and which should I choose?
Grades indicate visual characteristics rather than durability. Prime grades offer a clean, uniform look, while rustic gradesdisplay natural variations, knots, and grain patterns for a more organic feel.
22. How do I maintain wood flooring?
We recommend routine sweeping and mopping with products specifically designed for wood floors to keep them clean and well-maintained. For oiled floors, periodic re-oiling is beneficial to refresh and protect the wood surface, while lacquered floors can benefit from occasional use of a refresher to restore shine and resilience. In higher-traffic areas, maintenance may be needed more frequently to preserve the finish and keep the floor looking its best. Please consult with Hoff Parquet team for more information.
23. How can I prevent gaps or cupping in my wood flooring?
Maintaining indoor humidity levels (ideally between 45–55%) helps minimise expansion and contraction that can cause gaps or cupping. Acclimatising your wood flooring before installation is also essential.
24. Can wood flooring be refinished?
Solid wood flooring can be sanded and refinished multiple times. Engineered wood flooring can also be sanded depending on the thickness of its wear layer, with premium products allowing refinishing up to five times.
25. Is wood flooring easy to install on my own?
Wood flooring can be challenging to install on your own, as it requires precise techniques for proper fitting and stability. Our wood flooring uses a Tongue and Groove system, which needs to be either glued down or secured with secret nails, rather than installed with a click-lock mechanism. While DIY installation is technically possible, we recommend professional installation, particularly for solid wood flooring, to ensure accurate alignment, adequate acclimatisation, and long-term stability. Professional wood flooring installers have the expertise to prepare the subfloor and account for details that ensure a high-quality, lasting installation.
26. What does sustainable wood flooring mean?
Sustainable wood flooring comes from managed forests that prevent depletion and promote responsible harvesting. Look for certifications like FSC or PEFC, which ensure high standards for sustainability.
