Preparation: Laying a Damp-Proof Foundation

Prior to the installation of the Wide Plank Wood Flooring, our team dedicated meticulous attention to the preparation of the subfloor. Understanding that the longevity and integrity of the flooring are paramount, we ensured the screed subfloor was thoroughly damp-proofed. This vital step is crucial in safeguarding the flooring against potential moisture-related damage, providing a stable and durable base for the oak planks. By incorporating a high-quality damp proof membrane, we were able to create a barrier that protects the flooring, maintaining its pristine condition and aesthetic appeal over time.

Installation: Where Artistry Meets Precision

The heart of this project was the installation of our premium wide plank oak wood flooring. Selected for its robust quality and timeless appeal, the oak planks add a touch of rustic elegance that complements the natural surroundings of the country home. Our Hoff Parquet fitter, with years of expertise and a keen eye for detail, meticulously installed each plank with precision.
What sets our installation apart is the attention to detail, especially at the edges. Every edge was cut with remarkable precision, ensuring a flawless fit and finish. This level of craftsmanship not only enhances the visual appeal of the flooring but also ensures its durability and stability, preventing potential issues such as warping or gapping.

Wide plank oak floors for country and rural homes

Country houses and farmhouses often have older ground-floor slabs with no damp-proof course, or new screeds poured in extensions that take months to dry. Both are risky under wood. Testing the screed and applying a liquid or sheet damp-proof membrane before fitting protects wide oak boards from cupping and gaps caused by moisture coming up from below. Older rural houses can also have uneven flagstone or brick floors that need levelling first.

Hoff Parquet supplies wide plank oak across Scotland and the rest of the UK, including rural properties well outside the cities, with delivery direct to site. Our installers carry out moisture testing, levelling and damp proofing as part of the job, and the same floor can be continued onto bespoke oak stairs and thresholds. Samples are posted out free so boards can be judged in the house's own light.

Questions about this project

Do I need a damp-proof membrane under engineered oak on a screed?

Yes, if the screed is above the moisture limit for the adhesive or the slab has no reliable damp-proof course, which is common in older rural properties. Screeds should normally test at or below 75% RH (65% for some systems) before wood is laid; a suitable membrane manages residual or rising moisture.

Are wide oak planks suitable for an old country house?

Yes. Wide plank oak suits period and rural interiors, and engineered boards are more stable than solid on concrete floors. Thorough subfloor preparation matters more than the board itself in older buildings.
