Questions about this project
Is smoked oak a stain?
No. Smoked oak is darkened by exposing the timber to ammonia, which reacts with the tannins in the oak so the colour penetrates into the wood rather than sitting on the surface. Each board takes the colour slightly differently, giving natural variation.
Can random-width oak planks be fitted in a Clifton flat?
Yes. Random-width engineered boards are usually fully glued to a prepared subfloor. In a flat you will also need to check the lease for acoustic requirements and choose an acoustic layer compatible with glue-down installation before the floor is ordered.
