Walnut chevron and underfloor heating in London homes
Many London refurbishments, from Victorian terraces to new-build apartments, now include wet underfloor heating in a screed, and that shapes how parquet is laid. The screed has to be properly dry, the heating commissioned before the floor goes down, and the adhesive approved for heated floors. Can walnut chevron parquet be laid over underfloor heating?
Yes. Engineered walnut on a plywood base is suitable when fully bonded with an adhesive approved for heated floors. The screed must be dry, at 65% RH or less, and the heating commissioned first. In use, keep the floor surface at 27°C or below and change temperatures slowly.
Why is a damp-proof membrane used under parquet?
Screeds and concrete slabs can hold moisture for months, and timber absorbs it, leading to cupping or adhesive failure. A liquid damp-proof membrane applied over primed, levelled screed blocks residual moisture before the parquet is glued, as on this London project.
Is a semi-gloss finish practical on dark walnut?
Dark timbers show dust and fine scratches more than mid-tones. A hard-wearing semi-gloss hardwax oil gives walnut depth and is easy to clean, and worn areas can be re-oiled locally. Felt pads under furniture and mats at entrances make the biggest difference.
