5-metre Douglas fir planks for a Georgian New Town flat

In a Georgian flat in Edinburgh's New Town, Hoff Parquet supplied and installed Douglas Fir Wood Flooring 004 in the hallway and a bedroom. The engineered wide planks are 300 mm wide, 21 mm thick and 5 metres long, in natural grade with the pale, straight grain and soft round knots that make Douglas fir so characteristic. At that length most rows run the full depth of the hallway without a single end joint.

A small job done properly

It was a small, 22 m² job, but the preparation was the same as on any large project. We prepared the subfloor first so it was flat and solid, then laid the long planks from a straight reference line so they run true along the hallway and into the bedroom, with clean cuts around the door linings and the stair balustrade.

Douglas fir floors for New Town flats

Douglas fir boards were a traditional floor in many Georgian and Victorian buildings, so a long, pale fir plank sits naturally in a New Town flat. Engineered construction keeps 300 mm planks stable over old subfloors and central heating, while 5-metre lengths avoid the busy end joints that short boards create in long, narrow hallways.

Small jobs like a hallway and one bedroom get the same survey and subfloor preparation as whole-flat projects. Douglas fir samples can be ordered online or seen at our Morningside showroom.

Questions about this project

How long are Douglas Fir 004 planks?

On this project the planks were 5 metres long, 300 mm wide and 21 mm thick, so most rows ran the full length of the hallway without an end joint.

Do you take on small Douglas fir jobs?

Yes. This New Town job was about 22 m², a hallway and a bedroom, and it received the same subfloor preparation and careful installation as our larger projects.
