Extra-long Douglas fir planks in a Glasgow home
For this home in Glasgow, Hoff Parquet supplied and installed Douglas Fir Wood Flooring 002 as engineered wide planks: 300 mm wide, 21 mm thick and an impressive 5–6 metres long. Planks of that length run the full depth of the hallway and both bedrooms with almost no end joints, so the calm, straight grain and soft knots of the fir can be seen at their best.

Hallway and two bedrooms, glued down
The planks were laid in the hallway and two small bedrooms and fully bonded to the subfloor with Stauf wood-flooring adhesive. Gluing down long, wide engineered boards keeps them flat and stable and gives a solid, quiet floor underfoot. Planks were scribed neatly to the angled walls and around radiator pipes.

Stairs clad in the same Douglas fir, with bespoke nosings
To carry the floor onto the steps, we designed and produced bespoke solid stair nosings and clad the stairs professionally with the same engineered Douglas fir planks. The treads combine a plank with the bespoke nosing, the risers are cut from the same boards, and the nosings are mitred where the steps turn, so the angled steps beside the main staircase read as part of one continuous floor.

Douglas fir flooring and stairs in Glasgow
Glasgow's tenements and townhouses often have long hallways and changes of level, which suit extra-long planks: fewer end joints make narrow spaces look calmer and longer. Engineered Douglas fir gives the look of traditional Scandinavian boards with far better stability than solid softwood, and a fully bonded installation keeps 300 mm planks flat across the seasons.
We supply and install wood floors and stair cladding across Glasgow and the west of Scotland as well as Edinburgh. Samples of our Douglas fir colours can be ordered online or seen at our Edinburgh showroom, and our team can make nosings, risers and profiles to match any floor.

Questions about this project
How long can Douglas fir floor planks be?
Our engineered Douglas fir wide planks are available in very long lengths; on this Glasgow project the planks were 5–6 metres long, 300 mm wide and 21 mm thick, so most rooms needed few or no end joints.
Can stairs be clad to match a Douglas fir floor?
Yes. We clad treads and risers with the same engineered planks and make bespoke solid nosings to finish the front edge, mitred where steps turn, so the stairs match the floor exactly.
Should wide Douglas fir planks be glued or floated?
For 300 mm wide, extra-long planks we recommend full bonding with a suitable wood-flooring adhesive such as Stauf. It keeps the boards flat and stable and gives a solid, quiet floor.
