Light Oak chevron for high-end West End apartments

For high-end residential flats in Edinburgh's West End, Hoff Parquet supplied and installed Light Oak chevron parquet in the hallways, kitchens and living rooms. Light Oak is a natural grade engineered European oak with a soft, honey tone and gentle knots; laid in chevron, its sharp 45° points run the length of each room and give the open-plan kitchen and living spaces a strong sense of direction and calm.

The parquet

  • Product: Light Oak chevron parquet, engineered European oak
  • Grade: natural
  • Block size: 16 × 140 × 670 mm
  • Rooms: hallways, kitchens and living rooms
  • Stairs: small steps clad in chevron with matching stair nosings

Kitchens and living rooms

In the open-plan kitchens the chevron was set out so the points run straight past the islands and on into the living areas, and around the marble fireplaces the pattern is cut cleanly to the hearths.

Hallways and chevron-clad steps

In the long hallways the chevron runs on a centre line, finished with a straight border along the walls. Where the hallway changes level, the small steps were clad in matching chevron with stair nosings in the same colour, so the floor flows up the steps without a break.

Chevron parquet in Edinburgh's West End

The West End's Victorian terraces and converted townhouses have tall ceilings, sash windows and marble fireplaces, and many are now high-specification apartments with open-plan kitchens. Chevron parquet suits these long, well-proportioned rooms: laid on a centre line, its points lead the eye through the space and tie kitchen, living room and hallway together.

We plan set-out, borders and steps before installation so the pattern stays straight through every doorway and change of level. Light Oak and our other chevron finishes can be seen at our Morningside showroom or ordered as samples online.

Questions about this project

Can small steps be clad to match a chevron floor?

Yes. On this project the small steps were clad in the same Light Oak chevron, with stair nosings made in a matching colour, so the floor continues up the steps without a change of material.

What size were the chevron blocks?

The Light Oak chevron blocks were 16 mm thick, 140 mm wide and 670 mm long, in natural grade engineered European oak.
