Light oak herringbone for a bright kitchen extension

For this extension renovation in Morningside, Edinburgh, Hoff Parquet supplied and installed Ice Cream engineered oak herringbone parquet. The clients chose a premium grade: very clean, uniform oak with few knots, so the light, creamy colour and the herringbone pattern do the talking. With large garden doors, French windows and a roof light, the space is full of daylight, and the pale Ice Cream finish makes the most of it.

The parquet

  • Product: Ice Cream, engineered European oak herringbone parquet
  • Grade: premium – very clean and uniform
  • Construction: solid oak top layer on a stable plywood base
  • Block size: 13 × 100 × 600 mm
  • Installation: fully bonded over underfloor heating

Set out and glued over underfloor heating

The herringbone was set out from a centre line running the length of the extension, so the pattern lines up with the garden doors and flows straight through into the original house. Every block was fully glued to the screed. Engineered parquet on a plywood base is stable over underfloor heating, and a full bond keeps the joints tight as the heating cycles.

Parquet slid under the kitchen units

For the cleanest finish, we removed the kickboards from the kitchen units, cut them down and slid the parquet underneath the units as far as possible. The floor now runs right under the cabinetry, with no visible gaps or trims, and the cut kickboards sit neatly on top of the new parquet.

Herringbone parquet for Morningside homes and extensions

Morningside's Victorian villas and terraces are often extended at the back with open-plan kitchens, roof lights and garden doors. Herringbone laid from a centre line ties the new extension to the original house, and a light, uniform oak keeps a large, sunny space calm rather than busy. Engineered parquet on a plywood base is the right choice where the extension has underfloor heating.

Our showroom on Comiston Road is a short walk from Morningside Road, so it is easy to compare Ice Cream with other light oak colours, grades and block sizes in daylight. We survey the subfloor and heating, set out the pattern with you, and plan the floor around kitchen units and doors before fitting.

Questions about this project

Can herringbone parquet go under kitchen units?

Yes. On this project we removed the kitchen kickboards, cut them down and slid the parquet under the units as far as possible, giving a clean finish with no visible gaps. Where units are fixed first, the parquet can also be cut neatly to the plinths.

Is engineered herringbone suitable for underfloor heating?

Yes. Engineered oak herringbone on a plywood base is stable over underfloor heating when it is fully bonded to a dry, primed screed and the floor surface is kept at or below 27°C.

What does premium grade oak parquet look like?

Premium grade oak is very clean and uniform, with few, small knots and even colour, so the pattern and finish stand out. It suits bright, minimal interiors like this kitchen extension.
