Rustic oak herringbone for a Braid Hills family home
In a high-end private house in Braid Hills, south Edinburgh, Hoff Parquet supplied and installed Invisible engineered oak herringbone parquet in the hallway and living room. Invisible is a raw-look finish that keeps oak close to its natural, freshly sanded colour, without yellowing or darkening. In rustic grade, with its knots and lively grain, it gives the herringbone a relaxed, natural character that suits the house's arched hallway, bay window and panelled details.
The Invisible finish is listed in our shop as Invisible engineered oak planks and Invisible chevron parquet; herringbone blocks in this finish are available to order – contact us for samples.

The parquet
- Finish: Invisible – raw, natural oak look
- Grade: rustic – knots and natural colour variation
- Block size: 16 × 100 × 600 mm, engineered European oak
- Rooms: hallway and living room
- Installation: fully glued to a prepared plywood subfloor
Preparation and set-out
We prepared the subfloor with 6 mm plywood sheets to create a flat, solid base, and trimmed the doors and skirtings so the parquet runs neatly underneath. The herringbone was then set out from laser lines so the pattern runs straight from the hallway, through the arch and into the living room, before every block was glued down.

Herringbone parquet in Braid Hills and south Edinburgh
Braid Hills, Morningside and Fairmilehead have many large Edwardian and interwar houses with generous hallways, archways and bay windows, which are natural settings for herringbone. A plywood overlay over the original floor gives parquet the flat, rigid base it needs, and setting out from a laser line lets the pattern run cleanly through arches and doorways.
Our Morningside showroom is only a few minutes away, so clients can compare raw-look finishes like Invisible with warmer oiled oak and see herringbone, chevron and plank samples side by side before we survey the house.

Questions about this project
What does the Invisible finish look like?
Invisible keeps oak close to its natural, freshly sanded colour with a matt, raw look, without the yellowing or darkening of a standard oil or lacquer. It is available in planks, chevron and, to order, herringbone.
Why lay plywood before herringbone parquet?
Herringbone blocks need a flat, rigid, solid base. A 6 mm plywood overlay, screwed down over the existing floor, gives that base and a good surface for the adhesive, so every block can be fully bonded.
