Transforming an old staircase with oak treads and white risers

This small but transformative project in Edinburgh turned a worn softwood staircase into a bright, modern feature. Hoff Parquet made bespoke stair treads from our European oak wide planks, while the risers were finished as a simple, clean solution painted white. The contrast of warm oak and crisp white makes the stairs feel lighter and wider, and suits the hallway's pale walls.

Secure first, then clad

Before any cladding, we went over the whole staircase and secured every tread and riser, so there was no movement and no squeaks left. Cladding over a staircase that still moves only hides the problem for a short time. Once everything was solid and stable, each bespoke oak tread was cut to its own step, including the angled winder steps at the turn, and fully bonded down, with the white risers fitted to give clean, sharp lines.

Why oak treads with white risers? It is one of the most cost-effective ways to update a staircase. The oak gives a hard-wearing, natural surface where you walk, and painted risers keep the look fresh and easy to touch up. It also works well when the floors at the top and bottom are a different timber or carpet.

Stair cladding for Edinburgh homes

Many Edinburgh houses and flats have narrow, turning staircases in softwood that were always meant to be carpeted. Cladding them in oak is far less disruptive than replacing the stair, but it only lasts if the structure is put right first: loose treads, gaps and creaks are fixed before the new oak goes on.

We make bespoke treads, nosings and risers in oak, walnut, ash and Douglas fir to match your floors, from simple oak-and-white designs like this to fully clad staircases. Visit our Morningside showroom to see tread profiles and finishes, or ask for a free survey and quote.

Questions about this project

Can an old carpeted staircase be clad in oak?

Yes. Once the carpet is removed, we secure every tread and riser so there is no movement or squeaking, then bond bespoke oak treads to each step. Risers can be clad in oak or, as here, finished in white.

Can winder steps be clad with oak treads?

Yes. Each winder is measured and cut individually so the oak tread fits its exact shape, with the grain and edges lining up around the turn.
