Professional Subfloor Preparation – The Foundation of a Perfect Floor

​Before installing any high-quality parquet flooring, proper subfloor preparation is essential. In period properties throughout Edinburgh, floors are often uneven due to the age of the building structure. Achieving a perfectly flat and stable base ensures the parquet performs correctly for decades.
For this New Town project, our installation process began with structural subfloor preparation and levelling using plywood boards. The plywood layer was securely fixed to stabilise the existing subfloor and create a solid foundation for the parquet flooring.
After installing the plywood, our team identified areas that required further refinement. To achieve a perfectly smooth surface, we applied self-levelling latex screed across selected sections of the floor. This specialist levelling compound eliminates minor imperfections and ensures the surface is completely flat — a critical requirement when installing precision herringbone parquet patterns.
Once the screed had fully cured, a professional primer was applied across the entire surface. Priming the subfloor improves adhesive performance and guarantees that the wood flooring bonds securely to the base.

Precise Herringbone Layout for the Best Visual Impact

​One of the most important stages when installing herringbone parquet is the initial layout of the pattern.
In this project, our fitters carefully planned the geometry of the floor before installation began. The first row of the herringbone pattern was laid precisely in the centre of the hallway, creating a perfectly balanced layout that immediately draws attention when entering the property.
Starting the pattern centrally ensures the design flows symmetrically into adjoining rooms and corridors, which is particularly important in Georgian and Victorian flats where hallways often form the main visual axis of the home.
Each parquet block was carefully positioned and aligned to maintain consistent spacing and sharp angles throughout the installation.

Bespoke American Black Walnut Quadrant Beading
​To complete the installation with a refined architectural finish, we produced and installed bespoke American Black Walnut quadrant beading along the perimeter of the room.
This custom-made detail allows the flooring to expand naturally while creating a perfect transition between the floor and the existing skirting boards. Because the beading was manufactured from matching walnut timber, the result is a seamless and elegant border that enhances the overall appearance of the parquet floor.
Small finishing details such as this make a significant difference in high-end flooring projects.

Final Cleaning and Project Completion
Once the installation was complete, our team carried out a full cleaning of the property, ensuring the client could immediately enjoy their newly installed parquet flooring.
