The Bocca coffee table takes its looks from the larger Bocca tables and shrinks them down for the front of a sofa. The geometry stays clean and the joinery stays crisp, but everything is scaled to sit low and close to the seating.

Two small details do the heavy lifting. First, the underside of the top edge is milled away, so a 2 cm slab of oak looks much thinner at the rim than it is. Second, the top sits on a recessed, undercut band, which creates a shadow line between the top and the base and makes the table appear to float. Below that, the legs narrow towards the floor, which keeps the proportions slim and gives the table a little lift.

At 40 cm high it suits low sofas, and the rectangular shape fits the long, narrow living rooms common in Edinburgh tenements and the more formal proportions of Victorian parlours alike. The surface has real presence for books, a tray or a plant, and the oil and wax finish is repellent to water and stains, though it does need periodic re-treating.
